Israel Volunteer Coordinator

Skilled Volunteers for Israel matches experienced professionals with meaningful skilled volunteer opportunities in Israel. We link the professional expertise of Jewish adults from the Diaspora (generally 40+) with the critical needs of the Israeli non-profit sector through limited term volunteer engagements.  Successful placements and positive experiences are essential for the organization to expand and the individual hired will play an essential role in the organization’s development and operations.  The Israel Volunteer Coordinator is crucial to developing volunteer placements as well as providing “on-the-ground” support to these volunteers and the organizations that use them.  The position will focus primarily on finding and preparing volunteer opportunities for the volunteers;  supporting the volunteers and the non-profits before, during, and after the volunteer experience; working on group volunteer programs including placements and logistics. This position reports to the Executive Director for Skilled Volunteers for Israel who is based in North America. The Volunteer Coordinator also works with the support of the Skilled Volunteers for Israel Volunteer Consultant. 

Position Responsibilities

  1. Develop relationships with non-profits for volunteer placements and assess needs, including identification of existing and ongoing placement opportunities with Israeli non-profits
  2. Communicate placement needs and opportunities to North America staff for web posting
  3. Develop volunteer placements with non -profits  for placement into existing projects and/or for customized placements based on volunteer’ skills and expertise
  4. Coordinate planning with & provide orientation to the non-profit prior to volunteer arrival, including definition of volunteer duties, supervision, location, hours,  expectations, communication protocols
  5. Write up placement position description for each volunteer
  6. Introduce volunteer to non-profit at beginning of volunteer engagement
  7. Check in regularly with volunteer and non-profit during volunteer engagement and facilitate in person or telephone exit interview
  8. Provide intervention and support to non-profit and/or volunteer as needed
  9. Follow up with non-profits on feedback and opportunities for improvement after volunteer completes assignment
  10. Assist Executive Director in development and implementation of group volunteer programs including working with Israeli non-profits, program elements, logistics and support
  11. Provide support to volunteer housing process when appropriate
  12. Maintain database and files of all contacts through specified on-line Customer Relationship Management System (Highrise)
  13. Provide support in Israel to Executive Director as needed
  14. Contribute to organizational marketing, recruitment and public relations efforts through photography, blogging or  other outlets as appropriate and needed
  15. Serve as a resource for volunteers during their stay in Israel.
  16. Participate in regular meetings and briefings with Executive Director and/or Israel Volunteer Consultant
  17. Support orientation efforts to prepare volunteers for success
  18. Support ongoing efforts to improve Israeli non-profit preparation, understanding and support of volunteers through development of training, policies and protocols

Skills and Qualifications

  1. Fluent in written and spoken English
  2. Professional level of spoken Hebrew
  3. Demonstrated organizational skills, able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  4. Knowledgeable about Israeli third sector
  5. Excellent follow-though; completes tasks according to established timelines and deadlines
  6. Able to work independently and as part of a team
  7. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  8. Comfortable working within and between Israeli and North American cultures to meet communication and customer service expectations within both cultures
  9. Demonstrated commitment to quality in process, communication and follow-up
  10. Able to use computer, including but not limited to MS Office, email; willing to learn additional electronic tools for ongoing collaboration, communication and document sharing as needed
  11. Flexible and creative
  12. Required:  BA degree or above
  13. Required:  At least 2 years of prior experience working or volunteering in Israel
  14. Required:  Legal work status in Israel
  15. Prefer:  Prior volunteer coordination experience
  16. Required:  Individual is registered as a freelance consultant, VAT Exempt,  in Israel
  17. Required:  Have lived in Israel a minimum of three consecutive years
  18. Required:  Able to work with a flexible schedule
